For a moment there I thought I was the only one having a hard time giving up in giving advice. Sometimes it just turns around and then I feel as though I'm slapped straight into the face....I was just trying to help...and I know that my friends and family members enjoy my advice...they actually seek for it, call me to tell me their problems, or just hint me a little so that I start asking questions, to then start giving them advice so that I can patch them up, to tell them what to do or not to do, or how to respond in such or such a situation...and they listen carefully...really, and then they thank me, saying that I was really helpful and then they're off....but as for me, afterwards, I feel beat, exhausted, pooped-out, and most of all frustrated because they didn't follow my advice...and then they're back for the same topic, a litllte modified, yet the same...ouf!
I'm done with giving advice..I'll just smile...or say: "oh yeah? Hum...sorry to hear that...so what are you gonna do?".

I'm done with giving advice! And if ever they ask me directly for a piece of advice, I'll keep it short, really short. I'm done with giving advice.

I think the line appears when its professional and personal. At some point, your friends just want you to listen, right?

Don't stop giving advice!!! You like giving advice because you like solving problems, helping people and you have solid perspective. Your intentions are good! Your friends know this. You likely tell people things they might not want to realize or aren't ready for... but we need people like you in the world!

It's okay to wait for people to ask you for advice first, but I'd "advise" you to answer the question that needs to be answered, which isn't always the one asked.

For instance, I've asked all of my developer friends for the past 6 months if they could recommend any developers for full-time hires to help us get our startup off the ground. Finally, one of them recommended a development firm (which is not what I asked for) and BOOM, we're finally getting the work that needed to be done, done.

Reminds me of discussions I've had with my wife. When she wants to vent, I'm always trying to solve the problem (with advice). She has to remind me that she doesn't want me to tell her how to solve the problem (often there isn't one) she just wants me to listen. I'm working on it ... ;-)

I'm the same in business -- always happy to give advice because I love helping to solve problems. Like you, though, I'm trying not to give it unless it's asked for.

This is a good reminder for advice-seekers. They shouldn't wait for others to share advice. Don't be afraid to ask for it.

You can give me advice any time :) I like advice - from certain people, not just anyone - but you are on the certain people list.
