I joke around. A lot.

One of my all time favorite scenes is the scene in Goodfellas where Tommy DeVito (played by Joe Pesci) starts to mess with Henry Hill (played by Ray Liotta) while at dinner.

You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it’s me, I’m a little fucked up maybe, but I’m funny how, I mean funny like I’m a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I’m here to fuckin’ amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

So, when I want to be serious, It sometimes takes people a little bit to make that mental shift in their thinking that I am not trying to be funny, but trying to be serious.

I dont mind. Really, I dont.

But there are times, when I realize that sometimes the only thing that is important is just what matters. What matters to me. Seriously.

Today was a day like that. Fantastic day. Work went better than expected, still full of pressure, but diamonds arent created by petting carbon now are they?

And, at 4pm, I headed over to the Vet’s office with Billie in tow for the first of three appointments. The third appointment would be at VRCC (Veterinary Referral Clinic of Colorado) where she will have her other hip replaced.

Thats right, her second hip. She is two years old.

Bilie\'s X-rays

Many people find it funny that I have so many animals at home. Sometimes, I think its pretty funny as well. But, Billie is the first dog I have ever had.

And thats not what makes her special.

What makes her special is when I was in the process of getting healthy and sober, taking care of her, having to focus on her hip replacement and post op procedures really helped me focus and understand what was important in my life. And those morals, rules, whatever they are called have continued to stick with me. They are simple:

1) Be honest always.

2) Do right every time.

3) Do good in everything.

And more than any one living thing, that little dog taught me that.

  1. Oh Micah!

Hope all goes well with Billie and her surgery.

  2. Isn't it nice to distill it down to 3 easy bullet points?

Too bad Twitter is having such a hard time with it. (http://tinyurl.com/49f2n3)

  3. Im sure it will. Thanks for the good vibes. She is healthy and strong, and its the right thing to do, just a bit nerve racking, as you can imagine.

  4. Man's best friend has many lessons to teach. I hope she does well and you do too.

  5. amazing how the most simple revelations are the most meaningful. The world is as complex as it is for all the wrong reasons. Best of luck to Billie

  6. Totally.

Back when I had my Doodle (Dachshund-Poodle) Maxi, I had to drop her off at the vet for an operation before leaving on a 2 week vacay. She had over 200 tumors in her little puppy tummy and the vet made me say goodbye to her cause he said she was ' a goner'.

I called the vet the morning of her surgery…cause I couldn't wait until the afternoon…and was relieved to hear they got all the tumors, none of them were cancerous, and the vet was calling it a miracle.

She lived for 18 1/2 years total.

Definitely sending mega good vibes for the both of you!

  7. Oh hon… I'm so sorry I missed this.
What can I do to help?

My dog, Tar, a shephard-husky mix was my best-friend and constant companion before and even after I got married. She passed away a couple of years ago at 13 and I still miss her like hell every day. Mostly because when even *I* couldn't be there for myself with some of the bullshit in life I put myself through, she was still there. Still needing me, loving me, and trusting me to pull myself out of my well and be there for her.

That kind of bond is something I think we only ever have with dogs – and special dogs at that – because it's too trusting for any human to ever be capable of.

If there's anything I can do to help you and Billie out during this? Just breathe a word. Seriously.

  8. Thanks. I am going to stay home (work from home) for most of June. My
mom may come out one weekend, my sister another. But, I will certainly
let you know. The nice thing is that the best surgeon in the world
will be doing the surgery at VRCC, and we have gone through this once
    already…

Im also guessing that you dont religiously read my blog. You suck.

  9. I don't religiously read *anyone's* blog – not even my own! ;)
I don't use RSS feeds or flashy readers.
    Yeah, I suck.
But I do care – and I meant the offer. 100%

Actually, you'd probably be amazed if you knew how often I stop by your blog as compared to anyone else's – definitely in the top 3 along with my own.
That includes people I've known for over 25 yrs who blog religiously – yeah, they think I suck too. :)

  10. Wow! I feel quiet honored now. (I love how I am in the “top 3
    including my own.” LOL.)
