Personally i'm all against being tunnel visioned on weight loss. Its far easier to lose weight by focusing on building lean muscle while maintaining a long term diet change. That means extra time should be spent on actually learning more on nutrition and food labels and working onwards from there. Its possible to focus entirely on the weight loss part, but then it hinges alot on success and failure and self motivation. And exact bodyweight changes over the course of the day , so hopping on the scale when you're dehydrated would yield false positives. An overall lifestyle change towards muscle training doesn't mean you're trying to look like arnie.

Great post Micah.

I've been pretty active and fortunate with my weight for most of my life, but last fall I finally confronted the fact that my metabolism had started slowing down a bit, I wasn't as active as I used to be, and I'd put on about 20-30 pounds over the last 5 years. For the first time in my life, I had to get serious about what I was eating, how much, etc.

In the last 10 months I've lost 20 pounds and have another 10 or so to go. It's been harder than I expected, and a new challenge for me - especially maintaining motivation over time. I applaud you for kicking yourself into gear like this. Next time we lunch, we should find a kick-ass salad joint. :)
