Friendly Intelligence – January 12, 2008
This has been a stressful week for me, trying to finally find a place up in Boulder, and I think sometimes my mental / emotional state really affects what resonates with me. Unfortunately, this week, there wasnt a lot. Im guessing thats because when I am focused within, its hard to hear/read what others are saying.
Aw, Crap. The Bubble is Real. – Peter Shankman and I have known each other virtually for a number of years, but in the past year or so, have been good friends. He is probably the best connected person I know and the only person that makes me appear calm, focused and quiet (I’m kidding about the quiet part, no one can do that!). His posts from CES were everything Peter is: insightful, funny, a bit self-promoting, and intelligent. Read them all. This one is my favorite because it reminds me of my favorite Peter Shankman video.
One of the reasons I decided to work with Lijit was because the Foundry Group are investors. I had met Brad Feld and Seth Levine when I was working at ServiceMagic and the opportunity to be associated with them again was a positive for sure. What I didnt realize is how open, supportive, challenging, directive they, and their partners Jason Mendelson, Chris Wand (who sits on the Lijit board), and Ryan McIntyre would be. They certainly conduct themselves in a way that I hope to integrate into my personal and professional life. I guess the key for me, is that I assumed VCs basically gave money and then tried to either micromanage the investment or were completely divested in the company (other than the board meetings). What I didnt expect was to consider Brad, Seth, Chris and the rest of the Foundry team friends and mentors.
And now to complete the brown nosing…Ryan, Seth and Brad all wrote about their investment in Memeo, a software backup solution , that works on both Macs and PC. So, like a good ass kisser (I mean – Business Development Guy), I downloaded and installed it on my MacPro. Holy Moses’ Balls. It works like its supposed to, and has made a difficult experience easy. I guess those guys downstairs are as smart as people say they are…
2008 New Year’s Resolution 1: Seek Partnerships – My friend Jenn Ross, describes herself as a “Canadian living in Boulder, Colorado.” If she is representative of Canadians, more should move down. Jenn is a quiet, unassuming genius. She has been involved in, well, everything, and I learn something every single time I see her. Beyond that, what resonated with me about this post, is “seeking partnerships” might as well be the best description of the one thing I hold as most important in life. Jenn is looking for business partnerships, and if you want to be enriched through association, figure out someway to work with her.
