This morning, I jokingly told my friend Jake that the title on his blog, which reads “the coolest dude on earth,” was wrong. There was no way that he could be the coolest dude on earth, because clearly that person is me.

Blog about why you are the coolest dude on earth, and perhaps I will change it, he told me.

So here I sit. Trying to write about why I am the coolest dude on earth.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that I am not. Not in a melodramatic, woe is me kinda way, but in a “there is no one” coolest dude on earth.

Let me explain. Earlier this morning, I got a call from my friend John. John and I met in 1986. 22 years ago.I recently helped him get on Facebook and now he is addicted to Facebook.

Yes, I am a Facebook pusher.

Any way, John is married with a couple of kids. He has worked at the same job for like 14 years. He has a stability in his life that I have never known. To me, John is the coolest dude on earth.

Yet, as we finished our conversation this morning, John said to me, “Dude, you are the coolest dude on earth.” Seriously.

Can it be that John, Jake and I are the coolest dudes on earth? Isnt this a competition with a single winner?

Its not.

And thats whats great about life. You met hundreds of people, of which maybe dozens become good friends. Each friend does something, or knows something, or lives in a certain way, that makes you think, “Man, he IS the coolest dude on earth.”

As that happens again and again, you finally realize that what makes someone the coolest dude on earth is not what they do, what they know, or how they live, but that they are willing to share it.

For me, what makes me the coolest dude on earth, is just that. The ability to learn from the people around me consistently.

(If you didnt notice, I wrote this post as a test to see if I can rank on google for the Coolest Dude on Earth. Figure thats a lot better than being the #1 Douchebag, and will show Jake, the former coolest dude on earth, my raw excellence!!!)

UPDATE: I currently rank #2 for Coolest Dude on Earth. It would be great to push me up and over for the search term coolest dude on earth. Pretty sure that in the next day or two, I will become #1. Hopefully, Jake doesnt pull out any tricks like linking Coolest Dude on Earth from Threadless.com to his blog which is about the #2 Coolest Dude on Earth.
