Which is a great exercise. I think what most people forget is the
second step: doing something about it.

There is something comforting knowing that you have acknowledged your
faults (alcoholism, drug addiction, etc fall into this realm as well).
But so many people are too afraid to actually take action.

At TechStars, on day one, we go around the room and each say what we suck at. It's a little surprising for the new founders (who are very pumped up), but it works very well. it gets them thinking about fixing their weaknesses. first step - identification.

Isnt that one of the concepts behind the BIL conference? Access to
extraordinary people?

Knowing when to make a change is almost as important as recognizing
that change needs to occur.

The corollary to "surround yourself with those that are better than you" is "if you're the best at what you do in your circle, expand your circle."

When you're the best, you stop improving. I found this back when I did web/print design. 6 or so years ago I worked at a print firm and I was the best at web design (because no one else did it). What I produced was simply accepted at face value, and I was never really pushed to get better. But when I began connecting with others online who were in the web design field and who were orders of magnitude greater than me, I started getting better.

It's along the same lines as that saying "the more you know, the more you realize how much you don't know."

Whenever I start to think I'm good at something, I reach a plateau. It's then time to expand my circle - which could mean finding more people in a field, or expanding to a different field - and start sucking again.

Great post. I'm sure a lot of people think they suck at something but don't do much about it, even when others are affected. Truth is, you often must suck before you succeed. Hmm. that didn't really come out right ... never mind. Anyway, you get my point. On finding mentors to help reduce the suck, I think you are spot on. I need a few myself.

I suck at a lot. A LOTTT. But I'm trying to figure out what I don't suck at, & sometime that proves more difficult. I get caught up it suckage sometimes, and focusing on suck leads to apathy - I don't want to try anything new because I don't want to suck. But finding something I'm good at is so much more satisfying than sitting around being scared & sucky. Gotta jump in, I guess.

I think whats important is not to focus on what you suck at, but
accepting it and figuring out if its holding you back. Then surround
yourself with people that dont suck at that thing, and learn. Its
super rewarding.

Also, I think is a fallacy that people "find" what they are good at. I
think people are good at stuff inherently, and they are just looking
for ways to apply it (and to enjoy it). That sometimes takes work and
time.

Im a big believer in constantly moving forward, even if its painful,
rather than stopping to save ourselves from the pain.

Or something like that.
