micah - love your thoughts here.

i think that as the form of online media has shrunk and become easier (websites led to blogs which led to tweets which will lead to "favoriting") sharing small chunks of attention is prevalent. people share all the time about a good meal they are eating, a coffee shop they're visiting, a book they put on their kindle, etc.

the traditional "word of mouth" recommendations have come to the web and are supercharged by the inherent traits of online media - public, searchable, and easily spread. this is a much bigger change than it seems currently because it means that i will more and more rely on my friends' more frequent recommendations for things to read, purchase, listen to, & attend.

i think the end result is that the best strategy for marketing will no longer be to get as many people as possible to listen, but to get as many people as possible to share.

Right on man. When it comes to solving this problem, seems like most want to find a way to connect you with the random "mogul" or taste maker which you don't know that can advise you on the topic. This can be helpful, if I don't know someone who's already an expert in this area but what would be more helpful is if there was a way that I could tap the knowledge of my friends who I already know have a knowledge in a certain area.

If I have a friend who's a big beer guy and has similar beer tastes as me, I want to be able to stay up with what he's drinking. I don't care as much about what joe schmo beer expert thinks. He doesn't know me. There isn't a relationship there yet.

I was thinking about a concept similar to this idea. In today's world the idea is spreading that your passion can make you money. So as you were saying, being the #1 fan of a brand, industry, personality, etc. can translate into being a promoter and a conduit for discovery. I don't turn to google, I turn to my trusted sources on twitter to discovery content via 'word-of-mouth'. So in essence, your passion becomes your most valuable qualification to brands looking to promote their product. Being a #1 fan is now a potential career, because its value is now recognized and through the internet it can be quantified and measured.
